Thousands of people and their dogs show up for Celebrity Paws in the Park

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina (WCSC) — One of the biggest pet-friendly events took place Saturday at Riverfront Park in North Charleston — and it’s all about giving furry friends a forever home.

Thousands of people have enjoyed Celebrity Paws in the Park with their four-legged friends.

The event included dog dives, stage performances with Animal Planet celebrities, food trucks, music, vendors and free animal vaccinations.

Local animal shelters like the Charleston Animal Society, Dorchester Paws, Berkeley Animal Shelter and Saint Frances Animal Center had nearly 60 dogs up for adoption today.

Organizers say many of these shelters are extremely full, some at full capacity.

“It’s about realizing that the animals that come to our shelter are from your community,” said Will Howell of the Charleston Animal Society. “These are the animals of your communities, and it is your responsibility to find them a home. We appreciate so many people who have come out to support this message.

Organizers say proceeds from Paws in the Park go to help fight animal cruelty across the state.

The Charleston Animal Society says that since the start of this year, there have been more than 300 animal cases in South Carolina.
