Do you want a pet? Help clean up the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter on December 6

If you’re looking to give an animal a new home for the holidays, the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter has a variety of pets available for adoption in time for Christmas.

Prospective pet owners will not only have the opportunity to expand their families, but will also be able to adopt a pet at a reduced rate.

The “Empty Shelters” event reduces regular adoption fees to $ 25 for cats and dogs from December 6 to 20.

Shelter manager Stephanie Mullins said this was the second time the shelter has participated in the Bissell Pet Foundation event this year. The first event took place October 4-10.

The organization covers adoption costs in 230 shelters in 41 states, as well as in Canada.

“They pay the parish back the rest of the money so the parish doesn’t lose money, but the citizens still get the animals at a reduced rate,” Mullins said.

Animals like this are available for adoption at the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter in West Monroe at a reduced rate during the "Empty the shelter" event from December 6 to 20.

Normal adoption fees are $ 80 for dogs and $ 70 for cats.

Mullins said the shelter has 72 kennels, but only has three currently open and not all dogs will be available for adoption.

The shelter depends on donations and help from the public to help the animals, especially with dog food and cleaning supplies. The volume of dog food needed for the shelter alone costs between $ 25,000 and $ 30,000 per year, Mullins said.

The Bissell Pet Foundation was founded in 2011. The organization’s “Empty the Shelters” campaign has helped 67,758 pets find homes across the country and in Canada since its first event in 2016.

“Shelters are overcrowded and in desperate need of support due to slowing adoption rates and increasing length of stay for pets,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of the Bissell Pet Foundation, in a Press release. “With so many people looking to add pets to their families this time of year, our ‘Empty Shelters – Holiday Hope’ event is the perfect opportunity to make a difference in your community by saving a life and creating a space to give another homeless pet a chance. ”

The refuge is located at 417 Well Road in West Monroe. It is open for adoptions Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
